Alcohol Abuse Treatment Center in San Diego, California

Alcohol addiction or alcoholism is a serious medical disease that requires professional treatment to overcome. The disease can be devastating to both the addict and family members. Alcoholism takes a serious physical toll on the body and causes changes in brain chemistry that make it impossible for the alcoholic to control the urge to take the next drink. There are a number of risk factors associated with alcohol addiction, but the disease has been shown to strike people of all ages and from all socioeconomic levels.

Short-Term Effects of Alcohol

Alcohol can travel from the stomach to the brain within minutes, where it can have a number of effects on the body. These short-term effects include:

  • Impaired brain function

  • Balance and coordination problems

  • Slurred speech

  • Delayed reaction times

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Loss of consciousness

Long-Term Effects of Alcohol

When too much alcohol is consumed over an extended period of time the toll on the body can be severe. Some of the long-term ways alcohol can affect the body include:

  • Changes to mood and behavior

  • Heart damage, including heart arrhythmias and stretching of the heart muscle

  • Increased risk of heart attack and stroke

  • Liver damage, including cirrhosis, hepatitis and a fatty liver

  • Inflammation of the pancreas

  • Increased risk of some types of cancer, including breast, throat and liver cancers

Continuous heavy drinking can also lead to an alcohol addiction, characterized by a need to drink more to get the same effect (tolerance). Alcoholics may also suffer withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking alcohol, making it very difficult to quit drinking without professional help.

Addiction Signs

There are a number of signs that could indicate you have an alcohol addiction:

  • Regularly drinking more than you intend to drink

  • Continued drinking even if it is causing personal or professional problems

  • Inability to cut down or quit drinking, even if you want to

  • Needing more alcohol to get the same effect from your drinking

  • Experienced withdrawal symptoms when effects of alcohol wore off

  • Significant time spent obtaining alcohol, drinking and recovery from effects of alcohol

  • Withdrawal from family or friends to spend more time drinking

  • Gotten into legal or financial trouble as a result of alcohol use

Program Options for Alcohol Addiction

We believe that effective alcohol addiction treatment requires a holistic and individualized approach that goes beyond simply stopping alcohol use. Our treatment programs address the underlying causes of addiction, promote long-term sobriety, and help you rebuild a fulfilling, healthy life.

We offer several program options, each designed to provide the right level of support for wherever you are in your recovery:

Detoxification support

While we do not provide detox services on-site, we can assist in finding you a safe, medically supervised detox program before transitioning into treatment at West Coast.

Partial hospitalization program (PHP)

This structured program provides intensive therapeutic support while allowing you to live independently or in a sober living environment.

Intensive outpatient program (IOP)

A step down from a PHP, an IOP offers flexible scheduling while still providing frequent therapy and support.

Aftercare services

Discharge planning, relapse prevention strategies, and community-building opportunities can help you maintain your sobriety long after your program is complete.

How We Treat Alcohol Addiction

Our team takes a well-rounded approach to alcohol addiction treatment by combining proven clinical therapies with holistic healing practices. That means you'll have access to evidence-based options like CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing to help you work through the emotional and behavioral sides of addiction.

At the same time, we incorporate things like breathwork, trauma-informed yoga, nutrition support, and creative therapies to help you reconnect with your body and find balance. We are passionate about treating the whole person, not just the addiction.

Struggling With Alcohol Addiction and Mental Health?

Many individuals facing alcohol addiction also experience co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD. Our integrated treatment approach ensures that both addiction and underlying mental health conditions are treated at the same time. This pathway tends to lead to better outcomes for our clients.

Our staff is trained to recognize how mental health and substance use interact, and we create a compassionate space for healing both. No one should have to choose which struggle to address first. We’re here to help you work through them at the same time.
