Common Challenges
Members of the LGBTQ+ community can face struggles on a daily basis related to hatred, discrimination, and attacks surrounding their identity.
Common challenges for LGBTQ+ members include:
-
A lack of acceptance and support: Not receiving adequate support and acceptance from family members and friends can cause an individual significant distress and lead to feelings of isolation and issues with self-acceptance.
-
Attacks: Verbal and physical attacks, such as violence, hate crimes, threats, and harassment, can occur and cause one to feel scared for their safety in everyday situations.
-
Discrimination in medical environments: Discrimination by medical and mental health providers toward LGBTQ+ adults can prevent them from getting necessary treatment and might discourage them from seeking care in the future.
-
Discrimination in the workplace: Workplace discrimination and harassment can include being fired, demoted, having hours cut, or experiencing harassment due to gender identity, sexual orientation, or intersex status.
-
Heteronormative Expectations: Members of the LGBTQ+ community face daily attacks for breaking from heteronormative standards, from discriminatory laws to societal ostracism.
Addiction in the LGBTQ+ Community
These many challenges have led to higher rates of addiction in the LGBTQ+ community, as individuals may turn to alcohol or drugs in order to self-medicate. Approximately 20-30% of this community deals with substance abuse issues, as opposed to the approximate 9% of the general population. Further, alcohol, marijuana, stimulants, and opioids are more widely used in the LGBTQ+ community.
In addition to discrimination, addiction can also begin as a means to cope with intense social isolation. When someone is not accepted by the people around them, whether that be family members, friends, peers, or co-workers, it can lead to intense feelings of loneliness and exacerbate mental health symptoms.
In some cases, both mental health and addiction issues are present, often affecting each other. These co-occurring disorders require comprehensive treatment that addresses both issues.
